Media reports said the Jersey City shooting began when an officer, investigating a homicide, approached the store, which is near a synagogue and a school. Since antifa gained prominence after the election of Donald Trump, there have been several violent instances involving people who are associated with the group or have expressed support for its ideology. While his death shocked the small college town, I knew it was only a matter of time before antifa adherents would kill or be killed. Soon after the news broke of his death, Popular Mobilization, the Portland anti-fascist group that organized the protest turned riot in June where I was beaten, claimed him as one of its own. Authorities later found Landeros was carrying an extra magazine on his belt. He missed and was killed by returning gunfire from one of the officers. They attempted to place him under arrest, and he pulled out a handgun and fired two rounds at them. When asked by two school resource officers to leave the building, Charles refused. Last January, Charles Landeros, 30, wearing a "Smash the patriarchy" t-shirt, went to his daughter's middle school in Eugene, Oregon, to discuss a custody dispute.
