Mezcal margarita ingredients1/2/2024 ![]() ![]() Montelobos has a smoky and peppery flavor profile that prides itself on the balance and complexity. I did a lot of research on which Mezcal I wanted to use and finally landed on Montelobos. Tequilas are typically cooked in an oven, whereas mezcals are cooked in underground pits that help to create their smoky flavor profile. The difference really comes from what part of the agave plant is used and how its cooked. Quick fun fact: Did you know that every tequila is a mezcal but not every mezcal is a tequila? Both are made from agave and translated the word mezcal itself is derived from the Nahuatl word for cooked agave. But now I feel like the bar (get it, bar?) has been raised. Because they seemed less intimidating and easier to “get right”. When I first started making my own margaritas, I tended to gravitate towards those that were unabashedly sweet. This was my first time creating a mezcal-based cocktail at home ( mezcal is cooked in earthen pits, which gives it its distinctive smoky flavor over tequila). The rest I kind of just made up as I went. But I think I got the main points covered: carrot juice, mezcal, a spicy rim and cute garnishes (always cute garnishes!). So I think it’s safe to assume that my memory from that night is a little bit foggy. And I say “loosely” because I was moderately drunk at the time when I was enjoying them (hey, it was my Birthday!). These Smoky Carrot Mezcal Margaritas are loosely based off a cocktail I had last year on my Birthday. Need more?
